The HBCU Experience featuring the Fisk University Choir
The Historic Lula B. Sherman United Methodist Church presents its 18th Annual HBCU (Historically Black Colleges and Universities) Experience, featuring the world-renowned Fisk University Choir.
This annual musical experience celebrates faith, excellence, the joy of song, and the rich musical legacy of a HBCU— an institution that has long been the center of musical excellence, from Negro spirituals to gospel and beyond. Guests will enjoy an unforgettable evening of uplifting gospel music performed by the acclaimed Fisk University Choir. The event supports Fisk University scholars and helps fund initiatives that strengthen the North Shore community.
The evening will also celebrate this year's Lula B. Sherman Isibani Award recipients. Isibani, the Zulu word for “beacon” or “lamp,” honors those who have made extraordinary contributions to the community and culture — beacons of light who have led the way and made others' lives better, just as Mrs. Sherman did when she founded the church in 1922.

Annual Church Picnic
Join us for our Annual Church Picnic — a day of worship, laughter, and community! We will kick things off during regular service with a very special guest, comedian Teresa Sykes, before heading outside for an afternoon of good food, good music, and even better company. Immediately following service, we will fire up the grill for a cookout complete with a live DJ and band.

Cultural Worship Celebration, Costa Rica Consulate Ribbon-Cutting & Reception
Join us for a historic and deeply meaningful celebration as we host the formal welcome of the Consulate of Costa Rica to its new home here at Lula B. Sherman United Methodist Church. Our worship service will honor the rich cultural heritage of Costa Rica, with special recognition of the Garifuna and Afro-Indigenous presence along Costa Rica's Caribbean coast — a powerful testament to the diversity, resilience, and beauty of the Costa Rican people.
Immediately following service, we invite you to join us for the official Consulate ribbon-cutting ceremony, a dignitary program, and a reception celebrating this landmark moment for our congregation and our community.
This is a historic occasion and all are welcome to be a part of it.
The ribbon-cutting ceremony and reception will immediately follow the worship service.

Vacation Bible School (Sundays in July)
This July, Lula B. Sherman United Methodist Church is thrilled to kick off our youth ministry with Vacation Bible School! Every Sunday at 11:30 AM, we are opening our doors to youth of all ages for a month of fun, faith, games, and activities designed to engage, inspire, and connect our youngest community members.
Whether your child is joining us for the first time or has been part of our church family for years, this is a space where they are welcomed, celebrated, and seen.

Rev. Dr. Aaron McLeod's 4th Reappointment Celebration
Join us as we celebrate the 4th Reappointment of our beloved pastor, Rev. Dr. Aaron McLeod, to Lula B. Sherman United Methodist Church. Each year, the Bishop of the United Methodist Church reappoints pastors to their congregations — and for the fourth consecutive year, we are blessed to have Rev. Dr. McLeod continue his leadership and service among us.

Lula B.'s Rhythm Cafe
The Rhythm is calling! The Lula B. Sherman Ensemble and Band are performing on Saturday, May 30, 2026 at Lula B. Sherman United Methodist Church, Winfield Hall; 2214 Ridge Avenue, Evanston.
The Ensemble features vocalists Veronica Davenport, Venita Fields and Debbie Chisolm-Wynter. These three divas will perform a collection of Jazz and R&B favorites including music from the songbooks of Aretha Franklin, Sade and Roberta Flack. The Ensemble will be accompanied by band members Jeffrey Hardy, Darryl Petty, Chris Greene, Vuyani Wakaba and Charlie Horne and guest singers, Kusawn Carr Foster and Gary Wood.
The performance will consist of two sets with a 20-minute intermission. Complimentary refreshments will be served during intermission provided by local Evanston restaurateurs Clarence and Wendy Weaver, owners of C&W Market. Please join us for this celebratory cultural event.
Tickets are $30.00. Students can purchase a ticket for $20.00 at the door with a student ID.

Evanston Community Cares Food Drive
The Evanston Community Cares Food Drive is looking for donations and volunteers on March 28–29. This is a great opportunity to serve our Evanston community this weekend!
All are welcome to sign up to volunteer. Teens are especially encouraged and will receive official community service hours. Volunteers may also pack and take home their own box of food and essentials on Saturday.
